To absorb angular displacements
Contrary to axial expansion joints, which are expanded and compressed along central axis of pipeline, angular expansion joints absorb angular movements only. Multi-ply bellow made of austenite steel is the main part of angular expansion joint. Comparing to axial and lateral expansion joints angular ones are used as the elements of compensation system.
There are two types of angular expansion joints – hinged and gimbal. Hinged expansion joints absorb movements in one plane while gimbal ones compensate displacements in all planes.
